Course Overview: How to be a History Detective is a production course focusing on integrating archival footage within a contemporary non-fiction story. The course will be composed of both lectures and production lab time. Dur- ing the lectures, we will review the history of documentaries, discuss production technique and theory and supply several ‘case example’ screenings. We will also review Final Cut Express and Final Cut Studio. Students will be responsible for completing a Final Project. This should demonstrate their best efforts, aimed at becoming part of their representative professional reel that will help get a job out- side of school (or at least impress their family). LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1.What is archival footage? 2.Where do you find it? 3.What is legal to use and when do you need to get clear- ances? 4.Logging 5.Writing scripts that explain history but are written from a contemporary perspective. 6.How to integrate archival footage and graphics with contemporary interviews, 7.What is the market for films and TV shows that in- clude archival footage? 8.Student receive a PDF of the text I have written for this course The goal at the end of the class is for each student to have a finished work that can be added to their reel.
