About

A Censored History of the Documentary Film Course Overview Documentaries are one of the most popular genre’s of film today, with thousands of filmmakers producing non-fiction films. The documentary goes back to the very beginning of the motion picture industry. In fact, the very first films in the late 1890’s were called ‘actualities’ that chronicled daily events around the world. We will study the documentary over the course of the quarter. I’ve broken the class into three major themes. These include: History: The first three weeks will focus on a historic perspective on the growth of documentaries, beginning in the late 1890’s and going to the present. Style: The middle portion of the class will examine the most popular types of documentaries, including cinema ver- ity, docudrama, historic, PR/propaganda and family/personal biographies. Process: The final weeks will allow students to test their understanding of what makes a documentary successful by writing a research paper on their favorite non-fiction filmmaker. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of this course, students should be able to: 1.Implement pre-production plan to produce a short documentary film. 2.Use research techniques to compile a 3-5 page project report. 3.Create a list of interview questions. 4.Log and transcribe interviews and footage. 5.Write a short script using shoot logs and project outline. 6.Create a final edited version of a short docu- mentary.
